Ampersand of the Day

The reason for the choice of today’s ampersand is not necessarily aesthetically driven, but more of a technical nature. It’s the ampersand from Droid, the new text font around here.

With web fonts becoming more common and font hosting services becoming more numerous, site owners are no longer required to use the boring fonts on the web safe list or to practice the dark magic of Macromedia Flash. Now we can use pretty much any font we like through services like Typekit or Webtype (though the good fonts usually cost a yearly fee). The Google font directory is completely free and easy to set up, but most of the fonts suck. Except of course the Droid font family, developed by Ascender Corp. (now part of Monotype Inc.) as standard fonts for the low-resolution screens of Android mobile phones, which thus look very nice on screen. So here, enjoy:

By the way, the new font for all headings is, not surprisingly, Droid Sans.
