Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (panorama)

The Kunsthistorisches Museum is one of the two very impressive museum buildings opposing each other on the Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna.

When I first got into the hotel in Vienna on the Saturday afternoon before the conference began, (Zappel-)Joe was already waiting for me – he had taken the night train an had been hanging around in Vienna since 6:30 in the morning. Of course he had seen all the sights in the city center already, but this way he was a good tour guide, because we had to concentrate on the best of the best as we didn’t have much time before the sun was gonna set.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum was about the midpoint of a walk that started at the Stephansdom (Saint Stephen’s Cathedral) and ended at the Votivkirche. I have to admit that most of the buildings in the city center, near the Hofburg, are profoundly impressive – I had not expected such a density of pompous architecture. This really dwarfs what’s going on in Potsdam, and even Berlin, and must have cost huge amounts of money back in the day.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to actually go inside any of the many museums in Vienna – one could probably spend weeks in the town just visiting museums. I guess, I’ll have to come back one day…

Technical note: this panorama was stitched from 5 portrait shots (like so many on this trip) and nearly brought a 6GB quad-core computer running a 64bit OS to its knees (like so many on this trip) – this particular stitching mode (retaining the straight lines) creates huge files that require large amounts of memory before cropping, and it becomes very difficult to remove distortions and whatnot after stitching…
